EQUINE PROTECTION

For those of you who don’t know, Pete was the first horse we took in during the very beginning of Habitat for Horses.  He was 8 months old when I bought him from the killer-buyer at an auction and brought him home. A month later, a lightning bolt hit a transformer next to our house, sending Pete over a six-foot wooden fence and into the woods, there to be entangled in a mass of barbed wire on my neighbor’s property. The result left his front legs cut to the bone at his chest level, an open wound 18 inches across and nine inches tall. More>

Pan Am Games 2007July 15, 2007 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil—Gold is definitely a color that looks good on the necks of Americans equestrian athletes, and Team USA’s dressage squad were the first to have the honor to wear it among the three disciplines invited to the XV Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. The three-member team comprised of LaurenSammis, Katherine Poulin-Neff and Christopher Hickey finished their combined work to bring home the top honors in the dressage team final on Sunday at Deodoro Stadium and the National Equestrian Center, July 15. July 13, 2007 - Lexington, KY— A last minute decision to enter the class paid off for first-time USEF Saddle Seat Adult Amateur Medal Finalist Michelle Krentz as she swept the class with a unanimous decision from the judges and went home with the title. DeKalb, Ill. (June 29, 2007) – The doors have been shut once again on Cavel International, America’s only operating horse slaughter plant.  Just hours before its temporary restraining order expired at midnight last night, US District Court Judge Frederick Kapala held an emergency hearing and denied Cavel’s request that the court allow it to continue to evade prosecution under state law, pending the outcome of an appeal related to the case in the US Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit. April 18, 2007 - The USEF has begun a new expedited FEI and National Passport service which is intended to assist those who have an urgent need to obtain a new passport, revalidate an existing one, change ownership, change a horse's name, and to receive an FEI Recognition Card (a National Passport from any country that is upgraded to an FEI Passport.) April 18, 2007 - Consumer Alert: The FDA has announced a voluntary withdrawal of pergolide from the human market. Pergolide, which is used by veterinarians to manage Cushing's disease in horses, is also used to treat Parkinson's disease and other conditions in people. The FDA's decision is due to recent studies that showed up to 22% of human users may develop detectable abnormalities in their heart valves. There have been no recognized instances of cardiac valvular problems in horses on pergolide. If you're using compounded pergolide, call your pharmacy and urge them to tell their wholesalers there is a veterinary need.

February 8, 2007 - Urge your elected officials to support efforts to ban horse slaughter in the U.S. Two important animal protection bills that Congress passed over last year have been reintroduced. The first one, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (AHSPA), would ban the slaughter and international transport of live horses or horseflesh for human consumption. The other bill, the Rahall Amendment, would restore protections to America’s wild horses that were in place for over three decades and protect them from being killed for meat. On Tues., Jan. 16, Kim was jump-schooling her beloved horse Merle (Test Run) when Merle got a rail caught between his legs. In the subsequent fall, Kim landed in such a way which hyper-extended her neck. She sustained damage to the C3 and C4 vertebrae. She was immediately life-flighted from Ocala to Orlando. HORSE HEALTH ALERT! - Dec. 14, 2006 - State Officials in Florida are investigating a possible outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus – type 1 (EHV-1) in the Wellington, Florida area. Stadium Jumping Inc., producers of the National Horse Show and Winter Equestrian Festival, canceled its annual invitation-only Christmas Festival Horse Show this weekend to keep horses from mingling.
